OUR 10:1 HYDRATION RULE: A SMARTER WAY TO ENJOY ALCOHOL THIS SUMMER

As the summer continues to bring hotter days and consequently more opportunities to socialise outdoors, it’s easy to overlook one of the most important aspects of maintaining your health – hydration.

Whether you’re enjoying a glass of rosé at lunch, champagne at a celebration or a cold pint on a warm evening, alcohol and heat have one important effect in common, they both increase your risk of dehydration.

Why does alcohol dehydrate the body?

Alcohol suppresses the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), a hormone responsible for helping the kidneys retain water.

When ADH levels fall, the kidneys produce more urine than normal, causing the body to lose more water. As a result, alcohol has a diuretic effect, increasing fluid loss and making dehydration more likely.

During periods of warm weather, your body is already losing additional fluid through perspiration. When alcohol is added, these effects combine, increasing the likelihood of dehydration.

Why does hydration matter?

Water accounts for around 60% of an adult body and is essential for virtually every physiological process.

Even relatively mild dehydration can affect:

– Energy levels and physical performance

– Concentration and mental clarity

– Blood pressure and circulation

– Temperature regulation

– Kidney function

It also contributes to many of the symptoms people associate with drinking alcohol, including headaches, fatigue, dry mouth and dizziness.

Maintaining hydration is therefore about far more than avoiding a hangover, it’s an important part of protecting your overall health.

At Dr Sophia Khalique Associates, prevention is at the heart of everything we do.

One of the simplest recommendations we share with patients is our 10:1 Hydration Rule, a practical strategy to help reduce alcohol-related dehydration and support your wellbeing.

Our 10:1 Hydration Rule

While the exact amount of fluid lost varies between individuals, alcohol consistently increases urine output. Rather than attempting to calculate precise fluid losses, we recommend a simple, practical guideline that is easy to remember.

For every 10 grams of alcohol consumed, drink one glass (approximately 250 mL) of water.

The purpose of our hydration rule is straightforward: to help replace the additional fluid lost through alcohol’s diuretic effect and maintain hydration throughout the day or evening.

For example:

A 175 mL glass of 13% wine contains approximately 18g of alcohol = drink two glasses of water.

A pint of 5% beer contains approximately 23g of alcohol = drink two to three glasses of water.

A double measure (50 mL) of 40% spirits contains approximately 16g of alcohol = drink two glasses of water.

An equally simple approach is to alternate every alcoholic drink with a glass of water.

Additional ways to stay hydrated

Alongside our 10:1 Hydration Rule, we recommend:

– Drinking water before your first alcoholic drink.

– Eating before and while drinking, particularly foods rich in protein and healthy fats.

– Increasing your water intake if you are outdoors or exercising in warm weather.

– Continuing to hydrate before going to bed and again the following morning.

These simple measures can significantly reduce the effects of dehydration and support your body’s natural recovery.

Prevention is the foundation of good health

Exceptional healthcare is often built on small, consistent habits rather than dramatic interventions.

Our 10:1 Hydration Rule is one such habit, a practical recommendation designed to help patients enjoy social occasions while reducing the dehydrating effects of alcohol.

While drinking water will not prevent intoxication or eliminate every symptom associated with alcohol, maintaining hydration supports normal physiological function, helps protect your kidneys and cardiovascular system, and may reduce the severity of dehydration-related symptoms.

Sometimes, the simplest advice is the advice that makes the greatest difference.
